Gold leaf is gold that has been hammered into a very thin sheet. The thickness of the gold is only about 0.00009 mm. The hammered gold leaf is cut into 80 mm x 80 mm sheets of gold, which are transferred onto a sheet of paper. The sheets are assembled into a booklet of 25 sheets, called a book. The gold is attached to the paper by pressing. Usually one gold package consists of 10 books.
The gold content is expressed in karats. The higher the karat content, the purer and darker the gold. However, it should be noted that the copper contained in the gold may darken, for example, 22-karat gold as a result of impurities in the air. The content of completely pure gold is 24 karats. The most common types of gold used for gravestones are either 22 or 23 karats.
Gilding is usually done with a special gold leaf glue. You can also use a brush and gilding rubber to help you with gilding.
